For the first time ever, enterprises are seeing a significant number of employees in their organizations that are digital natives. The millennial workforce is growing by the day. According to InformationWeek contributor Kelly Sheridan, about 50 percent of professionals in the U.S. will be millennials by 2020. As far as businesses are concerned, this should be considered a very good thing. Sheridan believes it can help push organizations into updating their assets.

"As they look to the future, businesses should … be figuring out how they can use technological resources to solve existing problems and get things done," Sheridan stated. "The focus is not doing things for millennials, but doing things to ensure their companies will continue to exist 50 years from now."

There is an influx of technologically capable workers that's occurring in the present day. Enterprises have to start using the arrival of new talents to their advantage and make upgrades to their systems.

Influencing productivity through technology
Millennials are used to convenience in their personal lives. Things like smartphones and Wi-Fi networks have shown tech users that there is a lot that can be done with the tools in front of them. Unfortunately, these people don't always believe that their employers are on the same page. Millennials are not a group that needs its collective hand to be held, but they do believe in being provided with the tools that allow them to work smarter and not harder.

"While baby boomers and generation X members have had to learn and adapt technology to their roles in the workplace, millennials come well-equipped to interact with technology," wrote InformationWeek contributor Daniel Weinfurter. "The technical competence gap is diminished, and deep technical experience is less necessary for mere proficiency."

This is something to be capitalized on. Businesses have offices full of workers that understand and enjoy using advanced technology in order to complete their tasks more efficiently.

Making updates to legacy systems is crucial
Existing assets need a boost in order to be seen as useful in the eyes of millennials. One piece of hardware that has not aged well is the fax machine. Faxes are still essential in many industries, but the nature of modern digital documents has made faxing more of a chore than a convenience. Thankfully, it's possible to have faxing capabilities without the use of paper messages.
